High performing individuals bring a great depth of skill and knowledge to their work and training. They excel in most areas of their expertise and lead successful lives and careers. And yet, some of the challenges they encounter are more stressful than others. They are not always able to bring their knowledge and skills to bear in high stress situations, leaving them feeling unable to perform at their best.

These challenges are not related to lack of skill or experience, and require a set of skills not typically taught in school. Our ability to self-regulate is at the core of how we handle stressful situations. Ideally, we want our brains and our bodies to work in ways that foster a resilient response to stress and we want them to recover quickly once the stressful event is over. Mindfulness and biofeedback-based skills are specifically aimed at training the mind and body’s ability to self-regulate in challenging situations and optimize performance.

In this 2 day course, participants will learn how to help themselves and their high performing clients (athletes, business leaders and executives, attorneys, scientists, musicians and artists, among many others) to optimize their performance, increase resilience, and ability to self-regulate through the skills of mindfulness, acceptance, and compassion integrated with psychophysiological principles of biofeedback. We will cover specific applications of mindfulness and biofeedback techniques in optimizing performance, using lecture, open discussion, and first-hand experience with mindfulness and biofeedback.

As a result of taking part in this course, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss concepts of mindfulness, acceptance, and compassion and their relevance to performance, resilience, and self-regulation.
  • Discuss the concept of biofeedback and its relevance to performance, resilience, and self-regulation.
  • Observe and/or experience specific mindfulness and biofeedback techniques.
  • Explain how to apply mindfulness and biofeedback-based skills in training high performing individuals.
  • Begin applying those skills to their own practice. 

About Inna Khazan, PhD, BCB
Inna Khazan, Ph.D., BCB is a faculty member at Harvard Medical School, where she has taught biofeedback and supervised trainees since 2008. A clinical psychologist specializing in health psychology and biofeedback, Dr. Khazan also maintains a private practice in Boston, working with clients on optimizing their health and performance, using biofeedback and mindfulness based approaches. She has been invited to give keynote and conference presentations and teach workshops at national and international conferences on the topics of biofeedback and mindfulness. Dr. Khazan has conducted biofeedback and mindfulness trainings for notable institutions in the US and abroad, including the US Navy Special Warfare and the Stuttgart Opera and Ballet Company. Dr. Khazan is recognized as a pioneer in the area of mindfulness and acceptance based biofeedback, and is the author of a highly regarded Clinical Handbook of Biofeedback: A Step-by-Step Guide to Training and Practice with Mindfulness.

About Leah Lagos, PsyD, BCB

Leah Lagos, PsyD, BCB is a clinical and sport psychologist and BCIA Board Certified biofeedback provider in Manhattan, New York.  She earned a doctorate in clinical psychology from Rutgers University and served as a faculty member of the Center of Alcohol Studies at Rutgers University.  Highlights of her work with athletes include conducting interviews for NFL teams, as part of Professional Sports Consultants, for more than 9 years. Dr. Lagos has served as a consultant to PGA tour players to provide on-site support at tournaments such as the Masters' Tournament in Augusta, GA. Dr. Lagos has also served as a consultant to US Olympians providing consultation and on-site support at venues such as the London Olympics.  As a consulting psychological expert for the media, Dr. Lagos has appeared on the Today Show, NBC Nightly, MSNBC, CNN, CBS, Fox, Sports Illustrated News and ESPN.  She is a consulting editor for Biofeedback Magazine: Clinical Journal and was the Guest Editor of the 2015 spring issue. She is the Chair of the Optimal Performance Section of the American Association of Physiology and Biofeedback.  Dr. Lagos is also an appointed biofeedback provider for athletes and patients of several hospital programs in the New York metro area.
